Politicians' Declarations of Vested Interest Should Extend to the Parties They Belong To
The solution to the current debate on political donations is simple - MPs
should have to declare a conflict of interest when voting on a Bill if the outcome of the Bill will benefit a donor to the political party they represent.
Therefore if an MP votes to bail out a bank because of the current financial crisis the MP should reveal that the bank is a major donor to the his or her party. The fact that the donors' money is not going directly into the MP's pocket is not relevant, as every cent a donor gives to a party is one less cent the MP needs to spend on his or her campaign. Every MP elected to represent a party is an indirect beneficiary of the generosity of every donor to that party, and big organizations don't give out money for nothing.
One Nation on the other hand is financed directly by the honest taxpayers and working families of Australia and One Nation has no qualms about being under an obligation to these people. One Nation doesn't get finance from banks, casinos, tobacco companies and multinationals because these people know their days of unfair political influence will be numbered when One Nation gets into power.
It is an essential part of democracy that everyone has the right to donate to the political party or candidate of their choice but to safeguard the integrity of Parliament absolute transparency, which doesn't exist at the moment, is essential.
