The Rudd Government Should Follow Obama's Policy of Opposing Unilateral Free Trade

Will the Rudd Government abandon economic rationalism and follow Barack Obama's policy, which is the same as One Nation's policy, of opposing unilateral free trade?

Here are some statements Mr Obama has made that reveal he is not a free-trader to the extent that the misguided people who run our country are.

In the 2007 AFL-CIO Democratic primary forum on August 8, 2007 he said: "Look, people don't want a cheaper T-shirt if they're losing a job in the process."

In the third presidential debate against John McCain on October 15, 2008 he said: "...In the same way that we should enforce rules against [Communist] China manipulating its currency to make our exports more expensive and their exports to us cheaper."

In a Press Release titled "Renewal of American Leadership " dated July 12, 2004 he said (in relation to Communist China) "We should insist on labor standards and human rights".

These quotes come from www.ontheissues.org.

In his inauguration speech we had promises from Mr Obama to be all things to all people and do everything but find a cure for cancer, but words don't put food in peoples' bodies, rebuild the shattered homes of Gaza or refill the bank accounts of those unfortunates who have been ruined by the sub-prime mortgage disaster.

His intelligent stand against unilateral free trade, however, if followed would help restore the integrity of our national economy and that of the US.

Everyone talks free trade but it's only a few misguidedly altruistic countries like Australia who are stupid enough to practice it.

Even though John Howard when Prime Minister was reported by AAP on February 11, 2007 as saying "If I were running al-Qaeda in Iraq, I would put a circle around March 2008 and be praying as many times as possible for a victory not only for Obama but also for the Democrats", One Nation says we should follow Obama's stand against free trade and put the interests of our own people first.
